Interior design for bungalow extension-renovation
To provide whole-house interior design solutions for this transformational project.
The brief was to weave industrial chic throughout the kitchen design, three bathrooms, laundry, four bedrooms, two living areas, and the games room, creating a fresh and open home that is fit for entertaining and cosy family living.
Clare, Scott and their two sons are a busy family and wanted their home to reflect their personalities and creative nuances.
“If it wasn’t for you I don’t know what our house would have been looking like. It definitely wouldn’t be as creative and styly, and we wouldn’t appreciate it as much as we do now, so thank you for that. It’s been an amazing journey. We just found out we were on the right page early on, and in sync, and it just went from there. It was really easy.”
The movable kitchen island is a key element when entertaining outside.
With its solid American Ash timber top that accents the timber flooring throughout the extensive living area. Resene White Pointer is the base colour for the whole house.
Looking from the Media Room, painted in Resene Stack, towards the large open living space, where the sense of over-height is balanced by ceiling recessed double-track Textilia and James Dunlop curtains, and three oversized pendants.
A simple unfussy kitchen design, with the open pantry tucked away, allows multiple people to move around this space. Prime Panels Oak Noir cabinetry, paired with a Trend Stone engineered stone bench top, anchors the space, while the large-format concrete tile wall-long splashback elevates the subtle industrial vibe.
Everyone’s favourite room, the guest toilet, is a beautiful mix of Resene Elephant, House of Hackney Blackthorn wallpaper, repurposed Rimu bench top, and Assortment Lighting acid wash pendant.
The family bathroom is made to feel light and airy, and like a quirky haven by contrasting black and white details, lowering the ceiling height with Resene Black, and adding interest with over-mirror lighting placement.
We cleverly repurposed Rimu flooring from the old part of the house to create the bath plinth and vanity top. These elements accent the dark textured tiles from Brymac Tiles. Lighting from Mr Ralph and the ceiling is Resene Quarter Stack.
Clare thought it would be a great idea to create a passage from the games room to the adjoining hallway through the hallway storage cupboard, primarily for easy access to the boy's bathroom. It turns out that everyone uses it to get around the house all the time. The door is hidden behind the batten-patterned wall in Resene Elephant, with a subtle nod to wallpaper within.
